  1. Taylor with Uilenberg, Oliver with Duhamel. Does it mean that Taylor is ready for promotion and UEFA will give Oliver some time to gain more experience at European stage? Or maybe other way round? What do you think?

Nice to see five First Group referees appointed to important, undecided games. Well done, UEFA, great (final?) test for them!

    1. Indeed, the different importance of observers for Taylor and Oliver could indicate something. I think that Oliver is still young and he has a lot of time, while Taylor, in terms of promotion, could get this opportunity soon and in recent times he was many times observed by committee members.
I expect him to be promoted soon.
About the other Category 1: second game in KO for many of them. Mažeika and Kružliak will officiate at under 21 tournament, so it is good if they keep good performances.
About Kulbakov and Buquet I'm starting to think that this is already their "final destination", in the meaning that a significant period of time has passed but they get always the same games (CL group stage and some good games in EL KO stage). This would mean that committee considers they as a middle way between "Elite" and "Category 1", without the need of a promotion. Buquet 1977 (40), Kulbakov 1979 (37). Let's see what will happen.
Martin Strömbergsson is the Category 1 missing in the appointments, perhaps he was planned for Rostov - Manchester United one week ago and then replaced by Zwayer. This could be the explanation of the fact that the German, less than two days after his game in Russia, had a Bundesliga game on the subsequent Saturday. Definitely, too little time.
The Swedish is missing from appointments since November.
Nice to see Kassai back, expected game for Undiano Mallenco (similar appointment to Tagliavento in first leg).

  2. Gediminas Mazeika's development inside UEFA is also quite remarkable. Seems to establish as a First Group referee with regular presence in UCL from next season on, maybe similar to Sousa or Kulbakov. And who knows whether UEFA has even bigger plans with him one day.

  3. IMO it's a very risky move to appoint Oliver on that match. I would expect an Elite referee there.

Mazeika's appointment (and with that observer) could that the committee has more plans for him. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him on Elite in the near future.

    1. Indeed, before this round I would have expected 2 Elite officials for Besiktas-Olympiacos. As Makkelie seems to have managed the game very smoothly last week (?), maybe Oliver can do the same.

    2. I will watch this match and possibly we will have some videos.

    3. Does anyone know what's wrong with Strombergsson? Perhaps an injury? Makkelie performed well in Greece. Indeed nice challenge for Oliver to do the same. Why Nijhuis is missing in the appointments? I expected him in this round.

    4. Massive appointment for Oliver this one... If Oliver manages the game well he will indeed do himself a lot of favours within UEFA circles and I really expect him to do so... I wish him all the best for this important match!! 🙂

  4. Really interesting appointment for Oliver
Granted the observer is rather important - be interesting to see who has observed him in previous matches v Taylor?
I would imagine the English FA will do all they can to ensure at least 2 Elite UEFA referees come from England next season.
Hope he comes through this will a good match as I personally think that he is a more naturally gifted referee than Taylor.

  5. @DutchRef, I am going to cover Krasnodar - Celta and Man. United - Rostov.

    1. Very well! I was planning to do Besiktas-Olympiakos Piraeus and Ajax-FC Kopenhagen.

  6. Excellent decision following a very good teamwork in Besiktas - Olympiacos: Aboubacar from Besiktas sent off for a VC (head butt) when the game was stopped for a foul. Oliver was looking elsewhere, the VC was spotted by AR1, I guess. Perhaps, also FO contributed. This could be very crucial for the outcome, I praise the English officials.

    1. Does this add to Oliver's marks??

    2. The total acceptance of Oliver in the whole first half was really quite something considering the setting and his (all correct) decisions

    3. I also belive that decision was made by AR1, 4th Official looked confused.

    4. Really great performance by Oliver, maybe a couple of doubtful (no) cards but actually on the whole he showed definitely the qualities of an Elite Category referee. Always being on a level with the players, even pretty much total acceptance for the RC:VC.
Very 'mature' performance - the game wasn't so hard as it could have been thanks to his work!

    5. Good performance by Oliver, IMO. He was a little inconsistent at fouls without losing something major.

The VC is a great decision (probably by AR1) but IMO Olympiakos player should also being booked for provoking his opponent.

I will try to post some videos.

    6. What should be his possible marks for this game gents??

    7. He can expect something about 8.5 to my mind

  7. Two violent conducts in one off-the-ball incident missed by French officials. Claesson (KRA) elbows Hugo Mallo (CLT) who take his revenge by hitting an opponent with open palm in the back of his head. Only public warning issued.

    1. 70' Potential 2nd YC to Gazinskiy (KRA) for simulation not given. He had been already cautioned for simulation at the time! Either lack of courage or lack of certainty what exactly happened...

    2. True Ray. But fouls clearly out of ball's area and difficult to officials to detect that. Was in other side from ball and game involving. Typically case which video Assistance should be important. ant.

    3. Come on Ray. Your statement is ridiculous. There is a contact between players and defender pushed a little bit Krasnodar player. Oral warning is clearly the good way here. Second YC for they would be obviously too harsh...

    4. Don't overreact only because it's a French referee in the middle, please.

    5. By the way, you stated in similar scene that a YC for dive is the most beautiful thing the referee has to do in such case, so... different optic because of different referees?

    7. Please don't react just because of nationality...too. Just see action one more time and you will see that this isn't a clear action to give YC. Especially a second one. By the way, Ray, i ' m not french but Swiss. ;)

    8. BTW very tough game for Buquet, for what I'm watching.

    9. Buquet had all the arguments to issue a 2nd YC, even more taking into account Gazinskiy was booked earlier for the same reason. Even more after what you have said yesterday about pushing from behind... However, I didn't said it's clear, just a potential, waiting for opinions when video is available. Can't you see a difference? Calling someone's opinion ridiculous is not nice...

Correct sending off now. Second YC to Kaboré for reckless use of arm.

    10. Refereeing isn't compilation of actions which only laws have to be involved. That's also question of red card for Kabore is also a lack of courage ? Penalty appeal waved away just before too ?

    11. Ok Ray. Agree with you about Ridiculous. Apologize for this error. Please note that I m a fan of your analysis in 90 % of them. So please accept my excuses for this bad word.

    13. Agree, Chefren. Zbigniew Przesmycki will be having much to do in his observer report!

  8. And I see the difference yes. But can you recognize that with speaking of lack of "courage", we can understand that for you the card is mandatory ! :)

  9. Don't worry it is the same Clattenburg - always gestures, always high whistle ;-)

  10. 20' handball?penalty for Roma?

    1. In my opinion, not a deliberate handball, I agree with Kassai. The ball was unexpected.

  11. Mazeika (MU - Rostov) good decision, no penalty!

    1. Keeper pushing the attacker with both hands? To be rewatched.

    2. Another incident of this type! It didn't make attacker fall but still stupid behaviour that is more and more common nowadays.

    3. Some missed calls in this match. Not a good evening for Mažeika so far.

    4. This comment has been removed by the author.

    5. push was? It was, but is worth the penalty?

    6. I'm really torn in such cases. On the one hand, it's so stupid from defending player, as he would ask for a penalty to be given, on the other hand, it doesn't make player fall. Play on is probably the best option.

  12. Controversial handball penalty whistled by Clattenburg...

    1. Never, never, never deliberately.

    3. Clearly not a deliberate handball. I had still a small doubt, now I'm sure.

    4. For Clattenburg it probably looked like defender miscalculated the length, put his shoulder/arm out in reflex. The long distance and somewhat slow ball would make it questionable. Still I think Clattenburg should think twice here. Ball is on it's way out of the area, honestly it did not prevent any scoring opportunity either.

  13. 74' Roma - Lyon: a wrong offside flag by Ring denied a goal scored by AS Roma...

    1. What a game for Kassai in the last minutes, well we can discuss about some situations...

  14. Besiktas - Olympiakos Piraeus (Michael Oliver)

Unfortunately the broadcasting directors sometimes preferred to show the Turkish croud instead of showing replays of interesting situations. That's why some situations cannot be analysed to the full extent I'm afraid, sorry for that...

    1. 1. Missing caution, clear obstruction which is made even clearer on the reply where you can see him looking at his opponent before blocking him off

      2. Correct call, looked very theatrical from the attacker, very minor contact between both, perhaps suiting the 'English' style??

      3. No caution is acceptable, low speed, looked more clumsy/careless as opposed to reckless.

Second part the headbutt by no 9 is very well detected by the officials, good teamwork here and mandatory red of course!

      4. FK only is acceptable.

      5. Clear YK, can be no argument.

      6. YK perhaps slightly on the 'harsh' side but still acceptable

      7. Tough call for AR1, looked level but hard to be overly critical r.e this call

      8. Good advantage and correct YK

      9. Correct YK

      10. More careless, no YC acceptable

      11. For me missed RC for violent conduct, no23 white clearly kicks out at his opponent, such behaviour should not been tolerated and should be severely punished

      12. Missed YK for me, given the position of the attacker although I don't see it as a major mistake just to whistle the foul

      13. Eh, im assuming he's made a mistake here with his timings as he does look at his watch agian as if he's just noticed he's blown up for full time a full 1.15 early!

Overall then a fairly solid performance although I feel a RK is missing for White 23 in clip 11, plenty to keep him going though for sure!

  15. AFC Ajax - FC Kobenhavn (Ivan Kruzliak)

    1. Thanks DutchRef, interesting stuff here.

Well, Ivan Kruzliak is no stranger to blowing the whistle, got a pretty high card average and this match there are 9(!) cards and one pen. Tight game, some tough tackles and several SPA. My opinion on the situations then:

8' - Reckless tackle, guess Kruzliak thought warning was ok early in match. That is his approach, but I believe it is important to set the standard. YC any day.
13', 16' - These high boots are not pretty, but it is either all of them YC or none (consistency?) for Kruzliak. The studs from Kvist is not good, just think this must be YC (both though). Deliberate or not, dangerous play.
19' - The first SPA YC, barely touched opponent but this is lotg.
20' - Obviously a careless, unfortunate thing. No FK.
23' - Goal is solid onside. Well spotted, AR2.
24' - Ball in motion(?), perhaps not necessary to stop play.
31', 33' - SPA YC one for each team. But did Sanchez (Ajax) touch Gregus? Just barely I guess.
45+1 - Correct no playon, FCK player did somehow get first to the rebound after the foul. He couldn't predict AJA player would recover it after.
45+2 - Pen situation. Either SPA or DOGSO (I'd go for this facing goal inside area) would call for minimum YC here.

48' - Unsporting to kick away the ball when opponent has a FK. Correct YC.
65' - Correct YC for reckless tackle. Good playon call.
78' - Very strict here, not comparable to 48'. If you YC this, it will be hard to be consistent (did he believe he was?).
87' - Correct call for pulling jersey, reaction is kinda normal. Seen worse things not getting YC for dissent, but this is one of the focus areas these years.

Young, friendly ref. Does he have ambitions for more than EL, int friendles and qual matches?

  16. Krasnodar - Celta (Ruddy Buquet)
